Has anyone seen Mullholland Drive??? So many people raved about this movie and I love most arty films but I felt this one was far to disjointed. Any theories!!!

Adaptation - I have seen people who raved about it, so you may like it! Don't put too much store on my review. It is very clever, it just didn't grab me overall.
Mulholland Drive - I liked that film. One reason why it seems disjointed is that it was initially made as the introduction to a television series (a la Twin Peaks) - so there are a lot of characters who appear very briefly with apparently not much to do, who would have done more in the TV series had it been made. It wasn't, however, so Lynch tidied up what he had, shot some extra footage and put it out as a feature film. As for theories about "what it all means" - Lynch deliberately does not tell people what his films are meant to mean, and encourages people to find their own meaning. Lots of things are thrown into the plot almost on a whim, and people can make what they want of them. Bearing that in mind...for me, the film is basically an exercise in contrasting the perceived glamour of Hollywood with its seedy underbelly. The first 2/3 or so is the 'dream' which, through the eyes of Naomi Watts' character, is generally over the top with nostalgia and faux innocence, whilst a seedy underbelly lies beneath. In the second third, when NW 'awakens from the dream', her character is living the more debauched and hopeless life of many wannabe starlets. One interpretation of the film is here. Another is here. But I don't think any of these interpretations is necessarily "correct". What I particularly like about the film is the emotions that Lynch manages to evoke - and in particular, the surreal world of unease that he creates using familiar things. |

Am meant to be seeing Bowling for Columbine tonight and have taken all the above comments on board. I tried to read Stupid White Men on my holiday but found some of the over simplification and bandying about of unsupported 'statistics' a bit too much, even if it was quite an entertaining (and bloody frightening) read.
Adaptation sounds a lot more interesting that it seems to be in reality. I was quite looking forward to it, but after comments I've read here and elsewhere, and several opinions from friends and colleagues, I think I'll use my $15 on something else. |

Adaptation is a good video film. It loses nothing from being seen on the small screen for a fraction of the cost of the cinema.
Quote: That sums up Bowling for Columbine very well - hope you are entertained! |

Back to pop culture, I can finally go & see LOTR now it's been taken off the free list. I got some gold class seats for Christmas & have been saving them up for the two towers.

AP... I totally agree on HP. There were key things in the book, that helped add to the mystery of the piece, that were eliminated ENTIRELY until the end. It was more of a funhouse ride than a movie proper.
But parts of it were very good. Love to Laugh.

Quote: I so totally agree! Unlike Being John Malkovich, it lacked the few exhilerating moments that would make the whole a lot more tasty. I was curiously un-grabbed, STS. Love to Laugh.

Geo - how too too divine to see you over here in our humble Antipodean corner of the Sucks Splinterverse!
I haven't commented on Bowling for Columbine yet, but suffice to say I found it quite overwhelming the night I saw it. Shamelessly manipulative ( ) but clearly achieving some important work - even if just seeing Kmart take ammunition off its shelves. ![]() |

If I can remember right...X-Men was moved forward to May 1st. But I know for sure that within a 7 or 8 week period, beginning with X-Men, all of the big blockbusters for the year will be released...(Xcept for Daredevil...March 20th)...
X-Men 2....1st May Fast and the Furious 2 The Matrix Reloaded The Hulk Charlies Angels 2: Full Throttle Terminator 3 most of them will be released week after week as well, with the exception of a one week break between X-Men 2 and I think The Matrix, and maybe another one. Stay tuned for more. ![]() It's like voodoo without the doll |

yes!
Tomb Raider 2, Legally Blonde 2(can't wait to see my baby back on screen), American Pie 3(hope she's in this one again), Lord of the Rings 3 (which is gonna be meca huge compared to the normal humongousness), Spy Kids 3:Game Over (which should be interesting cause it's the first intenational release of a 3D movie..thats right...3D...since Nightmare on Elm Street 5), (the unfortunate disaster of a sequel to an original disaster of a movie) Final Destination 2 and Finding Nemo(Disney and Pixars next collabaration following Monsters Inc...it looks so good!) not to mention the 3rd Matrix movie in November...The Matrix Revolutions. Seems like 2003 is the year of the sequels! Oh, and to add to my list of movies I saw in the holidays...I forgot The Hot Chick!!!! Ha ha..crack up! (Ling Ling...you forgot your bling bling!) ![]() It's like voodoo without the doll |

Soup and Snowpeas - I reckon I'd be sacked if I worked at a cinema as I'd always be watching a film instead of working
Hacky - I missed Monsoon Wedding and the shorts made it look brilliant. Might see if it's out on video. And must make sure Adaptation's on the video list too. Hmm, Chicago's had two favourable comments - maybe I will weaken... I am just so not a musical kind of person, but then I've had aversion therapy for a lot of my life. Saw The Quiet American on a day celebrating the life of a family member who was a big Michael Caine and Graham Greene fan. It's a very beautiful, even still film with lots of soothing blues and greens (can you tell I saw it on a stinking hot day? Finally saw Bend it Like Beckham and thought it great fun but not as bloody brilliant as some of the accolades led me to believe. I think it's because in a way it's very similar to a lot of Aussie 'rites of passage' movies. I also saw it with friends who, while they found it funny, were disappointed with some of the simplistic 'let's make fun of wogs' style of humour - exactly the same attitude they had to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Oh well. Currently looking forward to: The Hours. |

Finally got to see Gangs of New York...................... ow man is it one freaking LONG movie. Over 3hrs. Its really good but i was a little disappointed because i was expecting better. One of the best parts and probably the most touching would be the last 20 seconds of the movie.
Also sow Just Married a few days ago. The funniest parts are in the commercial but they part with the African cockroach is the funniest. |
