Dunno if it will happen as it depends on getting a few night owls out of bed brighter and earlier than they're used to on Saturdays. Another idea was to watch the march on the telly with Dad, but we're not sure we're up to that. I'm seeing Billy Elliott courtesy of an Anzac Day special ticket deal, too, not that it's got anything to do with Anzac Day other than the theatre clearly wasn't getting enough bookings for the 25th. Anyone else doing anything? People here are still grizzling that we don't get a long weekend.

I would love a long weekend but rationally I agree that there shouldn't be one. The purpose of Anzac Day is commemoration, not celebration. The purpose of a public holiday for Anzac Day is so that commemorative activities can occur on the particular day free of the normal weekday commitments. Requiring businesses to potentially close on 2 days (Anzac Day and another weekday if Anzac Day falls on the weekend) puts an unnecessary impost on them. I do agree with the Government refusing most of the requests by retailers to operate on Anzac Day.

I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was when I was in town on Easter Sunday, although I had banked on picking up more food for the nephew's party from a couple of places. Although when I say 'quiet', there were still heaps of people, but not shopping.

It was good, and the RSL puts on a free breakfast afterwards. Dad doesn't go to the dawn service, there's a later one, mid morning, that he goes too. I don't think he marches anymore either, they have a bus for the oldies who can't walk that far. My boss actually asked me to work tomorrow, but I wasn't keen on that. Worked about 6 hours overtime tonight instead. possum

Good God, these people make me sick - wearing bright yellow outfits on such a sombre occasion. It's maddening that somewhere, someone is making a pretty penny out of this.

(Grandpa marched pretty much every year he was fit enough to make it up the hill to the Shrine.) However, Dad does seem to enjoy watching the march on the telly, telling us when the commentators get it wrong (or he thinks they have) and pointing out units he served alongside etc. This year we didn't go to the Shrine and I didn't turn the telly on until quite late so only saw my stepfather's unit march past. Not many of them left, either. Mind you, I don't think there's anything but the banners left for any of Grandpa's mob. Jgab, no I didn't and I think I'm glad I didn't. From the name of the group I wouldn't be so concerned about their outfits, but their behaviour. ETA: I googled for more info and here's The Fanatic's website: www.thefanatics.com/. It all makes so much more sense now, but being at Gallipoli on Anzac Day is very different to going to the cricket, Oktoberfest or supporting the Socceroos. The bell went and the lights dimmed for the minute's silence. My Son asked why after, and a friend told him that it was to honour those who lost their lives in the war, that was what the RSL was about, those men who served their country, etc. Yesterday he was telling someone about dinner at the RSL, and said 'yeah its where the army ate before they went to war'. So cute!

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I only found out the year before last what unit Dad was in during the war, he never used to talk about it. He went to a dinner year before last though, somewhere down in Vic, and met the son of a man who had also been in his unit. That started him off talking all about his experiences, it was very interesting to hear. I got a copy of his service record and all the information I could about his unit and made him a scrapbook for Christmas, the Christmas before last. Since then someone local has done a book with a page dedicated to everyone in the area who served in the Air Force during the war, so there's been more talk and he had me type out his contribution. The book launch is today and he was going to a dinner for it, so I hope he's had a good day. There's a few blank pages left at the end of his scrapbook where his story is supposed to go, we've made a bit of a start, but we have to sit down and put all his interesting stories in. possum

I put on Dad's and my medals and went to see him instead of going to the Dawn Service. The crematorium, where Dad is in a fairly "private" section, is less than 300m from where the local service is held so we didn't miss much. I left just after the end of the service and lost count of the number of people I saw taking a shortcut home through the crematorium, quite respectfully I might add. There were well over a hundred. TMA it was nice you did your own thing privately for ANZAC day....ceremonies are lovely, but private moments on your own are healing too. I can't get graveside to my Dad, but I have my own way of remembering.
