I drove thru that tunnel when I was in Melbourne in the new year. I couldn't get over how dark it was in there, everyone had their headlights turned on. The tunnels up here are very well lit, no need for headlights.

Mind you the long M2 tunnel is a bit dark and drivers are told to turn their lights on when going through.
You also note that in many of the Sydney tunnels, lighting is much stronger at the entrance than the exit. They put a lot of lights at the entrance so that the drop in light from outside is not too massive, then diminish the number of lights gradually as your eyes adjust. I wonder what has the bigger ecological impact - a well-lit tunnel, or a poorly lit tunnel with drivers using headlights? |

Ok, I don't think I've been through the M2 tunnel. I go through the M5 ones all the time, and the ED & Harbour tunnels occasionally.

The BUrnley is as Srev describes, well lit at th entrance and then dims as you go through. Drivers are advised to turn on their lights, and I only do so as it is difficult to see my speedo, but I have never found it to be dark as such.

I take my sunglasses off in the tunnel to see the speedo. No problem seeing it without the car lights on though, clear as day. ![]() |

It's on again...
In a British list of liveable cities, Melbourne ranked third (behind Vancouver and Vienna), Perth ranked fifth, Sydney ranked ninth. If you have ever been to Vancouver in winter and experienced how cold and wet it is, you might query how their ranking criteria were designed. Article |

Pfft...well I knew that...hence my being here
Vancouver does get very cold, but has glorious long warm summers, so I guess if you are a snowbunny/surfer, its perfect one season/perfect the next? |

Not exactly "warm" summers - average monthly maximum temperature in July/August is 23 degrees C. Which is pleasant enough but nothing special.
Average maximum in Dec/Jan is 5 degrees. Brrr. And not a lot of surf.

averages are crap to go on, Sydney's average summer temp is bw 25.1 - 25.7, while Melbourne's is bw 24.1-25.8....hardly indicative of what our summers
are really like.

True. The average daily maximum for Sydney is just under 26 for Jan-Feb.

Good one, Raceguy. I'd forgotten about London.
Ok, it's official: Australia is ranked fifth in the world swine flu stakes, with Victoria being the national leader. Score again! Go us! |
