Re-use of place names is quite common in Australia.

And what's worse, they're often re-used from overseas. So we get all these bloody cultural-cringe English and Scottish place names for places that are nothing like their overseas namesakes. Tasmania is one of the worst for that sort of thing. They seem to think they're Scottish.

I think it must also be confusing that one road can change names several times...

Oh yeah that's a pain in the wotsit. Middleborough becomes Stephens Road?!!!

Also the same road changes numbers. eg Canterbury Road changes numbers as it hits each suburb, eg Surrey Hills, Box Hill, Blackburn, and is very confusing ..............

When I first came to Australia I assumed Dandenong and Dandenongs were the same thing, just pronounced differently by some! I thought that for months, and visited Dandenongs many times. Then someone told me that Dandenong had a really rough reputation and I argued that it was lovely and quaint, and very beautiful. A few months later I had to get my visa sorted in my passport and the address was in Dandenong, so I looked up in Melway and realised it was miles from Dandenongs and a completely...

This thread brings back happy memories of drunken discussions around placename pronunciation and trying to teach American students how to say 'Cairns'. I'm sure they still think we were winding them up - not, strictly speaking, untrue but let's...
